Plastic aint always bad but it depends how you want it to feel obviously.

I've read the sony produces better images than the minolta. I can't really comment though because I havn't used either of them.

The sony seems to focus closer, its minimum focus distance is 39 cm where as the minolta's closest is 45cm. The minolta has a built in lens hood (not much of one, its pretty small), where was the sony does not.
