I havent tried the tutorial, but when I saw the edited pic of Mi, I thought it only had some contrast or curves lol. With photomatix pro its easy, in photoshop you choose an image and from that one, you have to get 3 (a bright one, a normal one, and a dark one) and then mix them with photomatix.

Lol in Photoshop you can do real HDR also. There's a merge to HDR option, where you blend the 3 different exposure pictures together.

Google is full of those HDR tutorials, it's not hard to find a decent one.

You could just import the image into Photomatix and then vwala, you have a tonemapped 'HDR' like image. ;)
